			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Arctic Visiting Speakers Series (AVS), managed by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) with funding from the National Science Foundation Division of Arctic Sciences, is accepting travel grant applications for arctic experts to share their knowledge in communities where they might not otherwise connect. Visiting speakers can include scientists and researchers, indigenous peoples, or any other person with expertise relevant to the Arctic.</p>
<p>Travel grants for speakers include funding for transportation, lodging, and per diem. The funding limit is $1500.00 for domestic tours and $2100.00 for international tours. Applications must be submitted at least one month prior to the expected event dates. Limited grants are available and will be awarded on a case-by-case basis throughout the rest of 2009. Speakers can cover a wide range of arctic topics and address a variety of audiences, including K-12 students, graduate and undergraduate students, and the public.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Northern Governance Thematic Network of the University of the Arctic, with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, is pleased to announce <strong>nine available fellowships for Graduate Students</strong>, valued at $5000 each. The purpose of these fellowships is to support the creation of research papers on Canada’s international arctic role.</p>
<p>Research papers will focus on one of the following two areas:</p>
<ol>
<li>The Arctic Council as a mechanism to advance Canada’s foreign policy objectives, including: (1) to deepen the exchange of best practices and explore a more robust discussion on policy issues and coordination; (2) to increase the outreach and advocacy role of the of the Arctic Council, including vis-à-vis Northerners; (3) to identify key emerging issues regarding sustainable development and environmental protection facing the Arctic requiring further study/research.</li>
<li>Canada in the circumpolar world: (1) future political trends and challenges facing the region; (2) how Arctic states can best manage emerging issues in the region bilaterally and/or multilaterally (eg. issues such as pollution/environment, Emergency Response, Search and Rescue through bilateral or multilateral cooperation/instruments including the International Maritime Organization, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change etc.); (3) opportunities for Canada to take a leadership role.</li>
</ol>
<p>Eligibility:</p>
<p>Qualified applicants must:</p>
<ul>
<li>be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada;</li>
<li>be actively pursuing a graduate degree (Master’s, Ph.D. or equivalent) in circumpolar and/or northern research;</li>
<li>be in good academic standing, as determined by your university;</li>
<li>submit a completed application form (available here  )</li>
<li>submit a 1 page paper proposal/abstract;</li>
<li>submit a letter of appraisal from a supervisor;</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Deadline for application is 1 November 2009. </strong></p>
<p>Final papers/essays must be submitted in English or French and cannot exceed 5,000 words including footnotes. Successful applicants will be notified by 1 December 2009. Final papers are due 1 March 2010.</p>

<h3>Meeting, Planning and Dissemination Grant</h3>
<p>The CIHR-IAPH Meetings, Planning and Dissemination Grants provide partial support for activities in, and relevant to First Nations, Inuit and Métis health. The aim of this program is to provide opportunities for researchers and stakeholders in Aboriginal health to:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Nasivvik Centre for Inuit Health and Changing Environments is a multidisciplinary research and training centre funded by the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples Health (IAPH), one of the 13 institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The Nasivvik Centre is focused on building capacity in Inuit health research through trainee support, and promoting research in specific areas of Inuit environmental health. The three (3) theme areas, as they pertain to community responses to environmental change, and in particular issues related to Inuit health and well-being are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Food</li>
<li>Water</li>
<li>Natural/traditional medicines and remedies</li>
</ul>
<p>Part of the Nasivvik Centre’s mandate involves the support of research and training for students. This year, the Nasivvik Centre is pleased to announce its sixth call for Summer Student Research Awards 2009 (undergraduate level).</p>
<p>Nasivvik Centre will provide funding for students to gain experience by participating in research during the summer months (May-August). Funding support shall be at the CIHR established level of $1,313/month for four months with a maximum award of $5,252. Applications for funding should be made by the researcher supervising/hiring the student.</p>
<p>Applications are invited from researchers whose work focuses on an issue related to one or more of the 3 themes identified by the Nasivvik Centre (see above).</p>
<h3>Objectives</h3>
<ul>
<li>To stimulate interest in research on key Inuit environmental health topics of importance to communities and organizations;</li>
<li>To provide support to students for training and research in Inuit environmental health;</li>
<li>To support the development of highly qualified researchers with knowledge and experience in Inuit environment and health issues.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Eligibility Requirements</h3>
<ul>
<li>The program is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada at the time of application.</li>
<li>Students must be working within an established research project.</li>
<li>Students must be returning to a recognized undergraduate/graduate University or College education program in September 2009.</li>
<li>Projects must pertain to at least one of the 3 themes of the Nasivvik Centre.</li>
<li>Grants can be taken up by University researchers and/or Inuit organizations.</li>
<li>Grants can not be combined with any other award from the Nasivvik Centre.</li>
<li>100% of funds must be used for undergraduate student salary.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Applications</h3>
<ul>
<li>A two-page description of the research project and a copy of the full research proposal (if project already received granting from a recognized granting council)</li>
<li>A ½ page description of the role to be played by the undergraduate student in the project</li>
<li>List and level of other sources of funding for the research project</li>
</ul>
<h3>Location of work</h3>
<ul>
<li>Name, contact information of the researcher and the undergraduate student</li>
</ul>
<p>Students will be expected to submit a 3-page report to the Nasivvik Centre upon the completion of their summer work by September 25, 2009 (format to be provided). Supervisors will be requested to aid the students in identifying any outcomes of their summer research experience.</p>
<h3>Review Criteria</h3>
<p>The selection of recipients for the awards will be based upon the following criteria:</p>
<ul>
<li>Training program/environment for the student.</li>
<li>Fit with key themes of Nasivvik Centre.</li>
</ul>

<p><em>You should participate in the Canadian Youth Steering Committee Youth Photo Contest!</em></p>
<p>As part of their activities planned for the International Polar Year, the Canadian Youth Steering Committee is holding a photo contest for youth, aged 20 and younger. Enter photos of your favourite animal or area. Ask your friends and family to pose for you, or take pictures of your community. Photos will be judged in three categories:</p>
<ul>
<li>Traditional Culture Today</li>
<li>Polar Wildlife &amp; Landscape</li>
<li>The Changing Poles</li>
</ul>
<p>First place winners in each category will receive $2500 in gift certificates towards new cameras and photography accessories, second place in each category will receive $1000 in camera equipment gift certificates, and third place in each category will receive $500 in camera equipment gift certificates. All submitted photos will be published and included in the CYSC time capsule to be stored in Yellowknife, NT until the next International Polar Year, 50 years from now. Twelve entry photos will be selected to produce a calendar to be sent to all entrants. This IPY Time Capsule website will be updated with further prize information soon, so be sure to check back!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Northern Governance Thematic Network of the University of the Arctic, with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, is pleased to announce nine available fellowships for Graduate Students, valued at $5000 each. The purpose of these fellowships is to support the creation of research papers on Canada&#8217;s international arctic role.  Research papers will focus on one of the following three areas:</p>
<ol>
<li> Canada in the circumpolar world: future political trends, challenges, opportunities where Canada should be taking a leadership role;</li>
<li> Canada&#8217;s Northern Foreign Policy: developments and impact on international relations; from community knowledge to international initiatives; sustainable economic development of the circumpolar region and its communities;</li>
<li> The Arctic Council as a mechanism to advance Canada&#8217;s foreign policy objectives: strengthening the governance and the effectiveness of the Arctic Council, strategies to advance Canadian priorities in the Arctic Council, circumpolar international policy, increasing the awareness of the Arctic Council, including vis-à-vis Northerners.</li>
</ol>
<p>Qualified applicants must:</p>
<ul>
<li> be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada;</li>
<li> be actively pursuing a graduate degree (Master&#8217;s, Ph.D. or equivalent) in circumpolar and/or northern research;</li>
<li> be in good academic standing, as determined by your university;</li>
<li> submit a completed application form (<a href="http://www.usask.ca/politic/Research/ICGD.php">download here</a>);</li>
<li> submit a 1 page paper proposal/abstract;</li>
<li> submit a letter of appraisal from a supervisor;</li>
</ul>
<p>Deadline for application is <strong>December 7, 2008</strong>.</p>
<p>Final papers/essays must be submitted in English or French and cannot exceed 5,000 words including footnotes. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-December 2008.  Final papers are due February 28th, 2009.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The CIHR-Institute of Aboriginal Peoples&#8217; Health is pleased to announce a Travel Award to facilitate travel for Aboriginal individuals  - research trainees and community members &#8211; who will present or provide posters at scientific events in a field relevant to Aboriginal Health Research.</p>
<p>Fifteen thousand dollars are allocated for this current Travel Award.  A maximum of $1,500 will be awarded to individual applicants from Northern and remote areas and a maximum of $1,000 is available to applicants from all other regions of Canada.  A minimum of two Travel Awards are reserved for applicants from Northern or remote areas.</p>
<p>Consistent with the CIHR Guidelines for Health Research Involving Aboriginal People, this travel award is intended for Dyads; A dyad comprises two individuals (i.e. one community member, one research trainee &#8211; e.g. Master, doctoral student) that are presenting at the conference (oral or poster). The purpose of this award is to support community trainee conference presenters (dyads) with approved projects to travel to a conference where they can present original research relevant to the conference.</p>
