ICHR has also adapted a modified keyboard layout for Macs to facilitate Dene language transcription. Feel free to try it yourself.

Language Geek hosts several keyboard layouts for both Macs and PCs. You can create or customize your own by using the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (PC) or Ukelele (Mac).

Organizations

languagecommissionerIn 2008, the Languages Commissioner of the NWT delivered a special report on language rights in terms of quality of health care delivery. The report is a good starting point for both health practitioners and researchers reviewing the state of service delivery in NWT’s diverse linguistic and cultural setting. You can download the report and other resources from the commission’s website:

logo-pwnhcThe Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre hosts several resources related to oral traditions research as well as exhibits specific to aboriginal languages and place names.

logo-literacyThe Northwest Territories Literacy Council is a territorial organization that promotes and supports literacy in all the official languages of the NWT. They maintain a resource library of program support materials and literacy research, while developing a wide-range of family literacy resources for communities to use. Their website also hosts a resource page that catalogs a variety of instructional, reference, and literary materials.

logo-iccThe Inuit Circumpolar Council (Canada) hosts the website of the Arctic Indigenous Languages Symposium, a project of the Arctic Council’s Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG). The symposium, held in 2008, was both the culmination and catalyst for further action at the international stage on protecting and promoting Arctic indigenous languages. The website currently serves as the repository for information and research findings gathered in conjunction with the symposium.

logo-iliThe Indigenous Language Institute provides vital language related services to aboriginal communities so that their individual identities, traditional wisdom and values are passed on to future generations in their original languages.
