IPY Time Capsule Initiative
Three of our affiliated students, Bree Denning, Julia Christensen, and Alana Kronstal are chairing a special IPY Time Capsule Initiative to give northern youth a voice through art, creative writing, and photography. The project was featured on CBC News in February along with the work of the IPY Canadian Youth Committee. The time capsule will collect items for storage to “document the region through the eyes of today’s youth.”
“The Time Capsule initiative developed from the realization that little hard copy information exists on the legacy of previous IPYs, especially among youth which proves surprising for such a large international and interdisciplinary event. In fact there is little to no information documenting any specific youth involvement in previously IPYs. The Time Capsule initiative aims to address this significant gap by not only bringing youth together in its creation, but by building a visual, physical display that promotes the legacy of the IPY among youth today and tomorrow.” - Youth Committee
The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2008. Upon completion at the end of IPY 2007-2008, the Time Capsule will be exhibited and then stored in the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre in Yellowknife to be re-opened during the next IPY in 50 years. More details can be found on the intiative web site.
