Water Monitoring and Surveillance Project 2009/2010

Monitoring and Surveillance of Water Borne Diseases in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region: Adapting to a Changing Climate in the North

This project took place in the communities of Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk and Ulukhaktuk during the winter of 2009-2010. Led by Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC) in partnership with the Aklavik Health Committee and coordinated by the Institute for Circumpolar Health Research, the project had two goals:

  1. The first was to collect samples from water sources in the three communities to identify microbes and contaminants that may be present. Within these communities, short interviews were also conducted with Elders to identify any concerns around water quality and to determine their views on how climate change may be affecting the waters of their homelands.
  2. The second goal included an educational component. During the IRC Youth Town Hall Forum on Education in Inuvik, presentations on water quality and discussion groups were held with youth from ISR communities. A resource manual for teachers teaching about waters in the north was developed for grades 3-6. The manual will compliment the existing NWT science curriculum as well as the Inuuquatiguit curriculum. A primary focus for the educational component is to introduce youth to the concept of stewardship and their future responsibilities as community members and leaders in their northern homeland.
