The NT-NEIHR, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), is leading research in the North, for the North. The NT-NEIHR aims to create a network that includes community members, Elders, and researchers and to facilitate a supportive space where individuals can realize their goals around community health, research and learning. There are four priority areas:

  1. To build capacity through supporting northern youth and undergraduates to understand health research-related careers.
  2. To conduct community-based participatory research through the support of Indigenous communities and organizations to further the development of research that demonstrates their priorities and values.
  1. To uphold and implement co-learning strategies through developing curriculum and training materials that support co-learning, and developing orientation programs for non-Indigenous researchers and students who are new to the community and who are engaging in NT-NEIHR projects.
  1. Knowledge translation through the bridging of partnerships with NEIHRs and Indigenous communities in northern regions, as well as through increasing awareness among decision-makers regarding the importance of Indigenous knowledge in the generation of evidence in health research.
